It's the first Sunday of Zomtober (see
Eclectic Gentleman Tabletop Gamer or
Brummie's Wargaming Blog if you don't know what this is about). Since I signed up for this event, I am required to present a relevant figure which I've completed recently. So, here we go...
I've decided that my Zomtober entries will each have a pair of figures: a
survivor duelling with a zombie. This goes beyond the strict
requirement of a single model, but I think I can take it!
The first of these "vignettes" has
Michelle (with the shoe) defending herself against
waitress zombie (with the machete). Both of these are mash-ups that mix parts from 2 Wargames Factory kits: "Survivors: The Women" and "Zombie Vixens". Of course, you'd know that already if you'd read my post on
conversions!
As you can see, I was practising painting of both pink clothing and dark nylons. This gives away something of my approach to painting: once I've picked (or mixed) a colour of paint on my palette, I will often use it all up by applying it to a number of figures. Perhaps the skirt of one model will have that colour, as well as the trousers of another and the backpack of a third and so on. Obviously this depends somewhat on the suitability of the colour for each model!
The result of this method is that I tend to have
many figures on my model-making table that are all at different stages of painting. Sometimes it seems like it takes forever to finish a figure because it's been on the bench for quite a while, but in reality I suppose my throughput is fairly high.
Anyway, there we are. Zomtober, week 1 - done!

DeleteNicely done. Been trying the nylons/sheer thing on a model recently myself, and i am the same in using up a colour across multiple models, with loads on the go - you are not alone!

DeleteLooks good, I have yet to pick up the zombie vixens, did she come with the machette or did you add that yourself?
ReplyDeleteNo, the machete came with the "Survivors: The Women". The parts from that kit are quite compatible and can be mixed with the zombie vixens easily, though careful planning is needed to pick pieces whose level of animation matches.

ReplyDeleteThis pairing looks like a bit of a mis-match on paper, shoe vs machete, but when one of the combatants is a one-armed zombie, you can't count out the plucky survivor! The sense of narrative is just great.
I agree; normally I wouldn't give much odds on the shoe. However, I prefer my zombies slow; a fit & healthy adult who isn't taken by surprise has a good chance of fending off one such creature.
DeleteWomen taking their shoes of to fight is so Jerry Springer. Are they sisters and did they each sleep with the same boyfriend called Clyde and live in the same trailer get high and have alcohol dependency issues? Well they do in every Jerry Springer I have ever seen.
ReplyDeleteMatched pairs are a very good idea. darn wish I had thought about it. Maybe we should sort out a "duel" competition for the new year.
I like the mix and match approach very effective.

DeleteThe "duel" idea wasn't planned over a long period - it just came to me when I took these 2 figures into the daylight to be photographed. Still, it seems to have worked well...
It's on at 4am when I get up for work...... not daytime! Also not so much choice that time of the morning!
DeleteGreat looking minis! I need to pick up some of those Wargames Factory kits, as I like converting figures, and the WF kits sound(and look) perfect for that.

ReplyDeleteYou painting technique is very similar to my own for civilians, namely:
Put down whole lot of figures ready to paint,
Paint a colour on lots of differing parts of them
Repeat with different colours until finished.
It seems to take forever, but one day you have a whole host of figures ready !
Works for me anyway.

DeleteYes, that's pretty much my technique, except that I don't necessarily start a whole bunch of figures at the same time (more are added to the pool fairly constantly). Indeed, some of the models on my desk have been there for at least a couple of years, never having quite made it to that last colour or two!

Almost all of my zombies are unarmed, but I'd like to throw in an occasional one that's a little more dangerous :-) .
