Zomtober 2013, Week 3

Week 2 is this way <--.

Well, this is now week 3 of Zomtober.  I'll confess that it nearly caught me out, since I've been concentrating on painting witch hunters for the last week.  Still, I had some appropriate models on my workbench that were largely completed, so I've finished them off quickly.

Today's duel is between "Emma" (codename "M") and "Romero zombie".  Emma is a rookie member of the secretive "Men in Blue" organisation, though obviously women are also recruited.

How do I know that Emma is a rookie?  Well, for starters, she's turned up for the apocalypse in totally unsuitable shoes.  High heels like this are really not very practical for fighting or running ("shoes to die for"?).
Secondly, she seems to have fired low: the zombie has wounds only in the belly and these will not incapacitate it.

The question is this: will Emma retain her composure enough to aim for the head (and will she be steady enough to achieve this)?  If so then her machine pistol will easily have enough fire-power to dispatch the zombie.  However, if she continues to try for the easier body shot then the zombie will only be knocked back and inconvenienced until her ammunition is exhausted!

Emma is from Wargames Factory's "The Women" survivors.  "Romero zombie" is a special edition figure from Studio Miniatures (and could in one sense be described as "patient zero"; the person who started the entire zombie plague).

Week 4 is here -->

  1. Nice job mate. Emma is clearly following her basic training as your supposed to aim low and to the right when shooting sub machine guns as you arms get pulled up and to the left when firing a burst. I failed this week :( and have nothing for Zomtober I hope to perhaps catch up for next week.

I do like how she's cradling the uzi up in front of as well .

    1. You could be right - but basic training probably doesn't cover zombies. Let's hope she's a quick learner!

  2. Very nice! Either Emma will be a fast learner...Or be dead!

    1. Indeed. Mind you, that's probably true for everyone in an apocalypse: learn quickly or die!

  3. Good paint job on both of them, Hugh. All Emma need do is knock George off his feet, so aiming low is a good tactic. Once he's down she can stomp on his head and spear his brain with her high heels. Killer heels, after all!

    1. Ooh, that's not a pleasant image! I guess it would work, though :-) .

  4. Maybe Emma is in awe of Romero-Zombie, after all he's an un-living legend ;-D Great paint jobs!

    1. This would be a very bad time to be star-struck, I think!

    1. Thanks, Michael. There's not really that much detail there, but I like doing a little bit of description as well as the pictures.

  6. Another great post!

She does seem like she's aiming for the head to me, too. But I'll take your word for it...I have no doubt she was sculpted "preparing" to take the shot, so she hasn't taken the full aim yet! :P

    1. I'm not convinced that she's aiming. I agree that she's pointing the gun in the right general direction, though. With enough bullets, maybe that's enough?

    1. Thanks, pulpcitizen. I don't think this is my best work (I'm a little disappointed with Emma), but it's good enough for the table.

  8. Nice minis and like the story to go with them. I've seen heels used as a great anti-zombie weapon btw.

    1. Well, yes - heels could be used as a weapon. However, I think a machine pistol should work better :-) .

  9. Really excellent painting - I wish I had a fraction of your talent.

I think she's got the aim correct for a second burst. There machinepistols are always a bit "Pray and spray" - more suited to inner city drive-by work.
I would advise my trainees to open fire at a greater range. Nobody likes a successful shot to end with a face full of splashback Z-juice.

    1. I'm annoyed now: I've noticed a couple of details on the zombie which I've failed to paint :-( .

She probably *did* open fire at a greater range, but failed to put the zombie down permanently.

Laundry day after the Z-apocalypse will probably be hell! All those splatters...

  10. George is my favourite zombie of yours so far. I love his faded clothes. I'm also liking how you're lining the bases up. Nice work.

    1. Thanks, Kieron. George was done with simple washes over pale basecoats; nothing fancy.

  11. Don't mess with anyone called "Emma" I have learnt this in my past! Another nice duel and well done on week 3.

    1. Strange, I think of "Emma" as being a name for a rather superior Regency lady. Even though *this* Emma is wearing high heels and short skirt, I still imagine her to be quite refined and proper.

  12. Another two great models; pairing them off doubles production too !

    1. Again, thanks. I rushed these 2 a bit; they're not as good as I'd like.
