Zomtober 2014: The Leftovers

Introduction

As I'm sure you're all aware by now, I've been posting a series of model "duels" for Zomtober 2014.  Each duel consisted of one zombie and one survivor, often with matching elements on the bases to tie the pair together.  However, I've also used my enthusiasm for the month's challenge to finish off some other models that were lying around on my workbench.  Here are some of the figures that just didn't fit into a duel, perhaps because I didn't have a matching opponent or perhaps because I just couldn't see the story behind any such confrontation.

Zombie and Survivors

There's a single zombie here, plus 4 survivors of various types.  From the left, they're by Studio Miniatures, Wargames Factory (men), Hasslefree, Wargames Factory (women), Wargames Factory (men).  All of them are pretty much "out of the box"; there's very little conversion work on these models.

The first and the last figures are recent builds; they're on resin bases by Escenorama.  Note that the zombie isn't alone: there's an arm reaching out of the displaced manhole cover beneath him.  It's not clear whether this belongs to one more zombie, or whether the sewers are full of them!

What's my name?

 My last model for tonight is not completed, but I have a reason for showing him anyway.  He's a somewhat overweight survivor who is dressed for the beach with shorts, a tee shirt and flip-flops.  However even if he doesn't have much else going for him, this man is wielding a solid oar in both hands.  I don't think the zombies will find him an easy target!

I still need to paint his belt; I think all other details have been done, but I could have missed something.  Also, I need to give this chap a name.  So here's the deal: what should I call him?  Please make as many suggestions as you like and I'll choose the one I like best.  I'd prefer either a first name or a nickname rather than a surname (and nothing too obvious, such as Juan, please!)  You have until Sunday next!

    "Reginald did not have much luck with the ladies. He thought it was his name the ladies thought it was the dress sense and the lack of wits. But now was the Zombie Apocalypse, Reg thought that something might be very different. He was wrong!"

    I doubt you will pick the name Reginald but that is my suggestion.
    Good job on all of them. And I hope you find a name that fits him.

    Lovely little collection of models. I especially like the hand coming out of the manhole - great touch!! You've really sold me on those bases. An especially lovely job on the colours of your final survivor. Personally I'd surround him with three zeds and I'd call him Rowlocks and the three Zombies :-)

    Great job C6. Thanks for sharing dude!
    Marjorie is lovely, if the others are straight out of the box I think I'm going to have to buy said boxes.
    As for a name, Orson seemed a more obvious choice than Juan.
    If that doesn't float your boat what about Scott.

      Yes, I really like Marjorie as well. Of coursem, Hasslefree sculpt some of the best figures around...

      I think I already have another survivor called "Scott". Orson has merit, though :-) .

    Blake from the Lake. Nice bunch of survivors and the zombies duds look brill.

    The lady golfer looks a little bit odd could just be the photo angle though.

      "Blake" could work, I agree.

      I decided that I really wanted a striped shirt on at least one of my zombies, since they're reasonably common in real life.

      The golfer is just at the end of her swing; I think it must be the camera angle as she looks OK to me. Mind you, I'm no expert on golf...

    I'm inclined towards Redgrave - as a tip of the hat to Britain's greatest waterborne Olympian.

    Here are some other rowers who went on to chhieve fame in other fields http://www.rowinghistory.net/famous.htm

    Some surprising names there: Stephen Hawking, Rudolph Hess, Bram Stoker, Julian Clary...

      A surprising collection of names indeed! Of course, if I were to use the first name (I prefer this for citizens, but use last names for police and military) then it would have to be "Steve", wouldn't it :-) ?

    These are all great figures C6, evenif as you say "they are straight out of the box".
    The hand coming from the drainis a nice touch and I really like the logos on the caps too.
    I'm guessing "Mushashi" is a non-starter for a name, but he does look like my mate "Mikey".

    I like them all, Hugh. For your oarsman. I'd suggest one of Steve, James, Tim or Matthew (they're the first names of the UK 2000 Olympic coxless four.) Alternatively, I'd suggest Cameron.

      Thanks, AK. If you want to show them in October then you haven't much time left. Mind you, I'm not sure whether Zomtober is over after the last Sunday of the month or whether it still counts until the last *day* of October. Not that it really matters anyway...

    My final suggestion, Aristophanes "The Frogs" fatures a tale of Paralos (Unclear whether this is a personal or tribal name) who is a trireme oarsman.
    Paralos sits on the upper benches, and has gained infamy for his habit of breaking wind - much to the upset of the unfortunately placer rower of the 3rd rank.

    This isn't even close to the earliest recorded fart-gag. Examples have been found from Ancient Egypt and Babylon. Aristophanes appears to have raised the fart-gag to an art form in the Athenian theatre.

    I'm really liking the Wargames Factory survivors you are putting together I think I'll have to get those sets.

      Thanks, Robert. I like the idea of "Ken" carrying a bit too much weight :-) .

      The newer Wargames Factory kits are very versatile indeed and can be used as the basis for many different types of model. The only caution I'd give is that each figure has multiple parts; these are not really models for people with limited patience or model-making skills.
