Zomtober 2013, Week 4

Week 3 is this way <--

It's the 4th and last week of Zomtober 2013!  Again, I've only just painted my figures in time, so they're a bit of a rushed job.  Still, better finished a bit crudely than never finished at all, right?

Today's duel is between a couple of rather small figures.  For the survivors, we have "Lucy", from Wargames Factory's "Survivors: The Women" kit.  She's just a little girl in her party clothes, but she's lifting up an enormous revolver.  It's got a telescopic sight on it, which seems pretty strange to me!

Facing her is "army zombie".  He's one of the models from Blue Moon Manufacturing's old "Things That Go Bump In The Night" range.  These figures tend to be a little smaller than many other 28mm figures, but even then "army zombie" is rather shorter than most of the other Blue Moon figures.  I'd say he was 26mm from base to eyes.

The Blue moon figures have substantial integral bases, so I've not rebased them (unlike all my other models).  This doesn't help with the height issue when the zombie is short to start with!

So, what's the story?  "Army zombie" is dressed in a rather old-fashioned uniform, so I don't think he's a member of today's military.  Perhaps this is set some 50 years ago, at the time of the Korean War?  Alternatively, maybe he's a WW2 re-enactor.  Given the height issue, I think it probable that he's just a teenager at that.

Lucy's gun is enormous and should easily be able to blow big holes in the zombie.  The real question is: can she lift it high enough and hold it steady enough to aim?  Even if she does shoot then I imagine the recoil will bowl her over, so she'd better make the first bullet count!

It's been fun doing Zomtober this year; I've certainly completed some models that would otherwise have languished for a long time on my workbench.  Thanks to the originators of the idea and to all those of you who have supported me and all the other participants throughout this period.

  1. They look fab I have to agree the scope seems a bit odd. The army zombie must obviously be a teen battle re-enactor.. Great job on them both mate

    1. Thanks, Simon. I agree that a teen re-enactor seems most likely.

  2. I think they look great- not rushed at all. The little girl is cute.

    1. Thanks, Rob. Should I take it that you don't find small, military zombies cute, then :-) ?

  3. Lucy is wonderful and has a mean look in her eyes! "Do you feel lucky, punk?"

    1. I still think the gun is far too big for her, however determined she may be!

  4. I like them both. There is nothing odd about adding a scopesight to a pistol. Check out my latest blog post and look at the photo of Carolee holding a .44 Magnum with scopesight on her Risks and Rewards card. I wouldn't mess with her and I wouldn't mess with little Lucy either.Go Lucy and blow that sucker away!

    1. As long as she knows how to cock the revolver and aim, I don't think that Lucy will have any trouble at all in blowing the zombie away. It's what happens to her afterwards that I'm concerned about - the recoil will flatten her!

  5. I also like them both. Another nice duo. Congrats on getting Zombtober finished and some very nice results.

    1. Thanks, Clint. The soldier zombie is a slightly crude sculpt and I painted it in a hurry. Still, no one will notice in the middle of a horde, right :-) ?

    1. Wow, I really hope that the zombie isn't Lucy's big brother! It would give her nightmares to shoot him (at least, I *hope* it would)!

  7. Awww... Little Lucy's first zombie kill, maybe? I imagine she'll be blown backwards as soon as she shoots. But on the bright side, as long as she isn't catapaulted back into the wall, it means a bit of extra space between her and the zombie if she doesn't manage a kill shot.

Given the time of year, maybe the soldier outfit was a trick or treat costume? Great stuff.

    1. I think you've probably got it right - I don't imagine she's done this before :-) . You could also be correct about the fancy dress costume (I wonder if the zombie was at the same party as she was?)

  8. I like both! They look great. More than likely Lucy would knock herself in the head when she fires that revolver. The gun would spin right out of her hand and hit her in the face unless she has a very firm grip. And there's an interesting characterization offered above if the army zed is her older brother...

    1. It's easy to think of zombies as just targets, but it becomes more difficult (to me, anyway) if they're someone you know. If that is indeed Lucy's brother then she's got more problems than just a broken wrist or concussion from being whacked by the pistol's recoil.

  9. Great pj Colgar!
Call the soldier guy a teenager and you've got yourself a halloween shootout, spooky!

    1. The other possibility is that he's a youthful conscript soldier (Chinese, Korean, USA?) from a long time ago, preserved by some means until the present day. Either way, spooky indeed!

  10. A zombie re-enactor! I bet that's a first time some one has thought of that.

    1. Ah, I bet it isn't! Every time I think I've had an original idea, it seems that someone else has already done it somewhere :-) .

There are certainly fancy-dress zombies available in 28mm; re-enactors aren't a huge step from that...

  11. Of all your recent duos I think these two are my favourites and you've done a really good job on them.
The handgun will almost certainly smack her in the face (there are some great you-tube clips of such incidents) and as for scopes on handguns these are really difficult to use (good article on their use at Guns and Ammo.com).
Recoils don't knock people backwards (nor do shotguns knock targets off their feet) put the surprise of the shot may have her on her backside.
There's probably 101 reasons for the GI type guy, take your choice from the great ideas above.

    1. Thanks, Zabadak. Whether the big pistol knocks her down or whether it smacks her in the face, I think that either would probably count as "stunned" in ATZ. She'd better make that first shot count!
